Race & Ethnicity, Unit 3

African Americans in US Prisons

African Americans disproportionately populate US prisons with rates of incarceration far outstripping those of white Americans. The total number of African Americans in US prisons is greater than the population of Glasgow and Derby combined. This editorial piece by Gary Younge linked to a Radio 4 documentary explores why race has such a profound impact on whether or not you will spend a portion of your life behind bars. This analysis is excellent for the Race and Ethnicity topic in Unit 4.

The documentary is set to air at 8pm tomorrow, I include the link to the relevant iplayer page in anticipation of it being put up at some point tomorrow evening.
