Parliament, Prime Minister & Cabinet, Unit 2

Holding the PM to Account

The BSkyB, Murdoch, Hunt, phone- hacking saga provided some wonderful Unit 2 examples this week. Any question on ‘how effecitvely is the PM held to account’, ‘how effective is Parliament in holding the PM to account’, ‘how powerful is the PM’ or indeed questions concerning the power or accountability of Ministers would benefit from this anecdote.

1) On May 1st the PM was dragged before the Commons (forcing him to cancel a visit to Milton Keynes), this unscheduled appearance in the House was sanction by the Speaker John Bercow who granted an urgent question to Ed Miliband.

2) Miliband claimed that Jeremy Hunt had committeed three breaches of the Ministerial Code. A situation that Cameron was forced to admit is beyond the jurisdiction of the Leveson Enquiry.

This whole saga raises some serious questions in relation to the power of Cameron- it is worth keeping an eye on over the coming days.
